If you’ve ever gone camping with kids, you already know this truth: they either become wildly independent explorers… or they’re bored in 10 minutes. That’s why having a simple list of camping activities for kids can make or break your trip.

Beach toys are great for more than just the sand at the lake

As a mom, I’ve learned you don’t need a packed schedule or a bunch of expensive gear—you just need a few go-to ideas that keep little hands busy and little minds happy.

Here are our favorite tried-and-true camping activities that work for toddlers, elementary kids, and even older ones.

🌲 Easy Camping Activities for Kids

1. Nature Scavenger Hunt

This is always a hit—and it buys you a solid chunk of quiet time. Download your free nature scavenger hunt below!

👉 Mom tip: Bring a small bag or bucket—they LOVE collecting things.

2. Campfire Story Time

Once the sun starts going down, gather everyone around the fire.

You can:

  • Tell silly made-up stories
  • Do “round robin” storytelling (each person adds a sentence)
  • Share childhood camping memories

It’s simple, but it’s one of those core memories kind of moments.

3. Outdoor Art Station

Camping doesn’t have to mean no crafts.

Bring:

  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • A notebook or sketchpad
  • Washable paint sticks

Let them draw what they see—trees, bugs, the campsite, or even their tent.

4. Bug & Critter Exploring

Kids LOVE this.

Give them:

  • A magnifying glass
  • A small container (temporary observing only!)

Let them look for:

  • Ants
  • Beetles
  • Butterflies

👉 Great sneaky homeschool moment too 😉

5. Bike Riding or Scooter Time

If your campground allows it, this is one of the easiest ways to burn energy.

Looping around the campsite = instant entertainment.

6. Water Play (If Available)

If you’re near:

  • A lake
  • A creek
  • Even just a campground water spigot

Bring:

  • Buckets
  • Cups
  • Water toys

This can keep kids busy for HOURS.

7. Camp Chores (Kids Love Responsibility!)

This sounds funny—but kids actually enjoy helping when it feels important.

Let them:

  • Gather sticks for the fire
  • Help set up chairs
  • Organize the food bin

It gives them purpose and keeps them engaged.

8. Flashlight Games at Night

Once it’s dark, everything becomes more exciting.

Try:

  • Flashlight tag
  • Shadow puppets
  • “Find the hidden object” in the dark

9. Classic Yard Games (Camping Style)

Bring a few simple favorites:

  • Frisbee
  • Ball
  • Ring toss
  • Cornhole (if you have space)

Low effort, big payoff.

10. Free Play (Don’t Skip This!)

Honestly? Some of the best camping moments happen when you do nothing.

Let them:

  • Dig in the dirt
  • Build forts with sticks
  • Make up their own games

This is where the magic happens.

11. Bubble Play at the Campsite

Bubbles are one of the easiest camping activities for kids—no setup, no mess, instant fun. Kids can chase them, pop them, or try to blow the biggest bubble they can. We always have some type of bubbles in our popup ready for the next camping adventure!

👉 Mom tip: Bring a spill-proof bubble bottle so it doesn’t tip over in the dirt or grass.

12. Camping Game Time (Inside the Tent or at the Picnic Table)

Board games are perfect for slowing things down after a busy day of exploring. They’re great for rainy weather, quiet time, or when kids need a break from running around.

Bring simple, travel-friendly games like:

  • Go Fish
  • Old Maid
  • Connect 4 (travel size)
  • Yahtzee or dice games
  • Spot It! (huge camping favorite for kids)

👉 Mom tip: Choose games with fewer pieces so nothing gets lost in the dirt or grass.

🧺 Simple Camping Activity Supplies to Pack

You don’t need much, but these help a lot:

  • Bucket or bag for collecting treasures
  • Crayons + notebook
  • Flashlights or headlamps
  • Balls or frisbee
  • Magnifying glass
  • Water toys
  • Bubbles
  • Board/Card Game Favorites
