  • 1 tablespoon BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Equipment

  • Campfire grill grate or portable grill
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Meat thermometer (optional)

Method

Prepare the Campfire
  1. Build your campfire and allow it to burn down to hot coals. Place a grill grate over the fire, creating both a direct heat zone and a cooler indirect heat zone.
Mix the Burger Mixture
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, BBQ sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
Form Patties
  1. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and shape into patties. Press a small dent into the center of each patty with your thumb.
Cook the Burgers
  1. Place patties over direct heat and cook for 3–4 minutes per side. Move to indirect heat if flare-ups occur. Cook until internal temperature reaches 165°F.
Add Cheese
  1. Place cheese slices on burgers during the last minute of cooking and allow to melt.
Toast the Buns
  1. Place buns cut-side down on the grill for 20–30 seconds until lightly toasted.
Assemble and Serve
  1. Build burgers with your favorite toppings and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Prep patties at home and store in a cooler to save time at the campsite.
  • Avoid pressing burgers while cooking to keep them juicy.
  • Let kids customize their own burgers for a fun camping meal.
  • No thermometer? Cook until juices run clear and centers are no longer pink.
